Typically, Microsoft Office applications don't easily save to the native document types of other Microsoft Office applications. This is understandable, as Microsoft Office is packaged as a suite, so anyone who has Word, Excel or Powerpoint probably has all three applications. However, less-common Office programs, such as Microsoft Project, have some overlap with other applications in the types of files they produce. Since these applications are less common, Microsoft has provided more file type options so that someone using Project can save her file to an Excel format and share it with individuals not running the Project application.
